News Waterside Arts is back for 2010 with a bigger, better Summer Festival. The dates this year, for the 17th annual Festival, are June 26th to July 10th – with events in both Hythe and Fawley. With sponsorship from local commerce and industry and various grants the vast majority of the events will be free.
The Festival starts on Saturday June 26th with a Multi Cultural Day at Gang Warily. This Recreation and Community Centre in Fawley will be transformed for the day into an international arena. There will be displays of dance styles from all over the world – belly dancers, bangra and line dancing to name but a few and also a series of hour long workshops in African, Caribbean, South American dances as well as the ‘Lindy Hop’.
Other areas in the Centre will house a photographic exhibition, story telling and various music recitals. There will also be a bar and it is hoped to be able to provide international food tasting. This event has been sponsored by Fawley Power Station and Esso and admission as well as the workshops will all be free.
The following Saturday – July 3rd the focus moves to Hythe Village Centre for a Traditional Village Fair. As is previous years there will be a range of entertainment all around the village – some regulars such as Morris Dancers, Jugglers and School Choirs and some newer events such as ’Bookshop Philosophy’ at Chapter One Bookshop in the High Street.
There will also be plenty of music – Marchwood Orchestra in St Johns Church and various Bands and Musicians on The Promenade Entertainment Area during the day.
Other things in Hythe will be a Children’s Morning at Hythe Library, an Activity Day at Cornerstone Church and an Open Day at Hythe Community Centre. Many of the shop windows will be displaying art from Applemore College and there will also be a chance to make your own sculptures which will be displayed during the week in the garden of The Grove, in St John’s Street.
The day which has been partly sponsored by the Barker Mill Charity, ends with a concert of folk music on The Promenade from the well known local musician Geoff Brammer.
This year the Waterside Arts Summer Festival returns to having some evening events during the week. Some are still being arranged but so far on Tuesday June 29th there will be a Poems and Pints Evening at The Malt in South Street. Then the following Tuesday July 6th at ‘Hythe Cinema in the Parish Hall, West Street will be the sing-a-long film of Mama Mia (there will be an admission charge for this event).
A really special evening will take place on Thursday 8th July in the Garden of The Grove in St John’s Street when Cavalier Jazzmen will present an open air concert – you will need to bring your own chairs. This free event is sponsored by Hythe & Dibden Parish Council and the sculptures made earlier in the Festial will be on display.
The Festival ends on Saturday July 10th with a Community Day in Hythe Village Centre. Local charities and community groups will be there to tell you about what they do, how you can get involved and possibly raise some funds. If you belong to a local organisation and would like to have a stall telephone Brenda Smith on 023 8084 9696. There will be music and dance on The Promenade Entertainment Area including Scottish Dancers and a Brass Band. A grant from New Forest District Council has helped cover the costs of this event.
For the younger children there will be entertainment from the ‘Praizin Hands’ puppets. While for older children and adults there will be a Hythe Living History Tour. Be led round the village, finding out about its history and the walk will be brought alive by characters from the past telling you about their own life and times.
Waterside Arts is a community based charity run entirely by volunteers. Its aim is to bring ‘education in the arts’ in its widest sense to all members of the community with free and low cost events. It also gives local performers, both amateur and professional a platform to show what they can do.
